Systematic approach to Systematic reviews

Systematic reviews must adhere to a strict scientific design based on explicit, pre-specified and reproducible methods in order to provide reliable, unbiased evidence. This session will provide an overview of the systematic review process and the steps and methods required to conduct a systematic review.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of systematic reviews in research and medicine
  • Describe the difference between narrative reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses
  • Clearly define the clinical question to be addressed
  • Select search terms, identify relevant databases, and manage search results for a sample clinical question
  • Understand what is involved in screening and critically appraising studies and extracting and analyzing data; identify freely available and fee-based tools to assist with these steps of the process
  • Ensure that journal publisher requirements for systematic reviews are met

This session is part 4 of the 7-session series, Supporting your Academic Publications, in collaboration with the Office of Faculty Development.
